Maintenance-Groundskeeper
This outdoor–indoor position combines general maintenance and groundskeeping duties, providing both preventive and corrective maintenance to help create a functional, warm, and welcoming environment for everyone who visits or works here. This role is committed to the New Song Sanctuary mission and values.
Key Responsibilities
- Respond promptly to guest maintenance requests.
- Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs (plumbing, electrical, HVAC, water, carpentry, painting) based on qualifications.
- Collaborate with the Capital Projects Manager for larger repairs and building works.
- Confer with the Innkeeper / housekeeping to ensure spaces are guest-ready.
- Maintain the walking paths, driveways, porches, cabin areas, and outdoor recreations and commons areas.
- Identify, report, and log maintenance or safety concerns.
- Conduct pest control and report hazards, repairs, or plant issues.
- Perform seasonal tasks such as leaf removal, snow clearing, and planting.
- Operate and maintain electric, gas, and hand-powered groundskeeping tools and equipment.
- Assist with event or project setup and teardown.
- Maintain accurate work and groundskeeping records.
Qualifications
- Experience in groundskeeping, landscaping, and general building maintenance, or a strong desire to learn; tech school or coursework is a plus.
- Respectful of retreat guest privacy.
- Basic knowledge of lawn & garden care and maintenance / handyman tasks.
- Ability to troubleshoot and solve practical problems.
- Ability to operate electric, gas, and hand-powered equipment.
- Time-management skills and flexibility to prioritize competing deadlines.
- Works well independently for extended periods of time and as part of a small team.
- Trusted to handle confidential and sensitive information.
- Able to use cell phones for email and instant messaging (alternatives may be available).
- Driver’s license preferred, but not required.
Time Commitment
- Work projects and locations are scheduled to align with guest check-out and check-in times
- On-call including mornings, nights, weekends, holidays, and for occasional special events or urgent repair needs
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Wooded resort setting involves walking on uneven terrain in all weather conditions and exposure to insects and wildlife.
- Physical indoor/outdoor activities involving lifting; bending; crawling; kneeling; standing; climbing; carrying and moving materials.
- Exposure to heights, sharp objects, and combustible materials.
- Exposure to construction chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, and cleaning products (preferably, enviro friendly).
Accommodations / Compensation
- This is a volunteer position
- Applicant responsible to invite ministry supporters to provide minimum $400 monthly for food and lodging on campus grounds. Recommended to raise minimum $200 more for personal needs and gas.
