Wrap Yourself in the Wild Beauty of the Ozarks

If you loved Where the Red Fern Grows, you'll love the Bear Hug. Enjoy the trees and wildlife from the covered porch, curl up with a good book in the rustic living room, or sleep late as sunlight filters through the leaves outside.

About the Place

The Bear Hug is New Song Sanctuary's largest cabin, with 4 cozy bedrooms that sleep up to 12 guests.

This is the place to book for a small women's retreat. It's ideal for children too, with a play set, trampoline, and access to a shallow spring-fed creek for hours of creative play.

The grassy lawn, flower beds, picnic area, and fire pit welcome you into the outdoors. And your stay at the Bear Hug gives you access to New Song's network of scenic trails. Meander across ridges and through hollows where the only sounds are wind and birdsong, or pause on a park bench to pray and reflect.

The Bear Hug is a good place to be even if the weather turns  unfriendly. Watch from the covered porch as rain splashes on the leaves. Or wrap yourself in a blanket indoors by the electric fireplace and enjoy the scenery and wildlife through the big picture windows.

Wherever you come from, each detail of the Bear Hug is designed to cradle you in quiet, rest, and safety.

Nothing is expected of you here.

Take a deep breath.

This day is all yours.

🏡 Highlights

🏡 You’ll have room to spread out in the open dining/living area. The rustic barn board table seats ten, and the bar along the big window seats up to four more.
🏡 Speaking of the bar, it overlooks the yard and creek, and it's a great place to work on your laptop and keep track of the children on the playground at the same time.
🏡 The gorgeous coffee bar came here from the Old World, and probably pre-dates the Declaration of Independence. Whoever did the intricate carvings would be startled to see the Keurig coffee maker, quality coffee grinder, charming electric tea kettle, and stainless steel French press on its marble top. You might come just to appreciate the coffee bar.

🌲 Know Before You Book

Things to Know About Bear Hug

🌲 You are welcome to park in the graveled areas beyond either end of the house. There is room for multiple vehicles, and you can park larger vehicles along the driveway. Please do not park anywhere on the lawn between the cabin and the creek.

🌲 The bunks are full length, but narrower than standard twins. It's plenty of space for most adults. Be aware when you book. All beds are ample for children.

🌲 The fifth sleeping area is an open loft with a futon large enough for two children or one adult. We've called this a "small double bed." If you fill all the rooms, the people in the other upstairs rooms will need to walk through this area.

🌲 The loft has sloping ceilings. Average-height people will have no problem standing upright in the middle of the rooms; tall people may have to stoop a bit.

🌲 The loft bedrooms have low doorways. They're perfect for children, but adults should be prepared to duck.

🌲 Please keep pets off upholstered furniture and beds.

🌲 Your stay includes a generous firewood supply, and you can purchase more should you run low. (To avoid spreading disease, please do not bring firewood from elsewhere.) Ask for details.

Things to Know About the New Song Property

🌲 While thousands of guests in all types of vehicles have successfully come and gone, be aware that the driveway is rough and somewhat steep. Drive carefully. We are happy to answer any questions you have about access.

🌲 Please contact New Song Sanctuary before bringing in guests that are not registered on the booking. We are generally flexible about visitors, but we need to know who is here.

🌲 To ensure you have a restful stay, New Song observes quiet hours from 10:30 pm to 7:00 am.

🌲 The water supply is unfiltered live spring water. If you are not comfortable with that, please bring your own drinking water.

🌲 New Song Sanctuary shares the woods with wildlife, including ticks, bugs, and spiders. Bring effective tick and insect repellent in season if you plan to venture into the woods.

🌲 The spring-fed creek runs year-round. It is full and gurgling most of the year but lower in late summer.

🌲 If you wish, you may dig wild onions in the woods (early spring) or harvest watercress from the creek (spring and fall). To avoid over-harvesting, respectfully leave some behind in each clump you find.

We hope you feel our love in every aspect of your stay at the Bear Hug. If this doesn't feel like the unforgettable experience you hoped for, please tell us. Your rest and renewal are our highest priority.

Stories of Renewal and Impact

"I was delighted when a friend offered me a two-night stay at New Song Sanctuary. I found a joyous solitude with God—a restorative silence, filled with birdsong and the murmur of the creek. A small cabin, an inviting hot tub, and beautiful outdoor spaces where I could speak my questions aloud to God. As I listened for His voice and relaxed in His presence, I was certain once more that "the earth is full of the steadfast love of the Lord" (Psalm 33:4)."

Carol Nisly, Parsons KS

"I have personally experienced Gwen’s New Song Sanctuary. I spent almost a whole week there, and it was such a balm to my weary soul! The peace and quiet of the 'hundred-acre wood,' with a stream bubbling past my cabin, the well-stocked supply of breakfast and other foods, the marvelous hot tub, and all the extra special little touches made my stay absolutely perfect! I went home refreshed, rejuvenated, and ready to face my stressful life again."

Julia Brubaker, Raymond, Alberta

"In a time when there was no familiarity or comfort from outside circumstances, your place provided refuge. My children and I were hidden away under His wings, literally—a hummingbird came and sang over me! I felt God show up in a way that would have been hard to experience in any other place. I’m convinced His creation is His greatest ministry to our hurting. Getting away from the noise and busyness of the city allowed me to clearly hear His answer to my question—'What’s next for me?'"
